India-Guyana Ship List

Corentyne River Bank

as you may know, in 1838 the indenture trade began between india and the british colonies all around the world.

as an alternative to slavery, the british hoped to have these laborers work this land with little compensation.

they settled in fiji, mauritius, south africa, the caribbean (jamaica, trinidad, guadeloupe, etc.) and south america: french guiana, surinam, and guyana.

i have found this ship list of those vessels leaving for guyana from india on a website by guyanafriends.com.

i have copied and pasted it below for future reference. my father’s father (named lakhsman from the gwalbans ahiri caste and chandravanshi gotra) left from kolkata in 1890 aboard the ss jura and landed in guyana in 1891. my mother’s father (named sant-ram mahraj from the brahmin caste) departed from kolkota in 1885 aboard the ss bann.

  4. Prema says:

Hi there, I am trying to trace my great grandfather’s arrival to Guyana from probably Calcutta. His name was Bhatto and he was on the Sutlej supposedly in the year 1890. He was originally from Gaya, Bihar.

Sometime around 1916, he eventually did leave Guyana, and had registered my grandfather (6 years old at the time) to go back with him…… but my grandfather’s older sister found out and with someone’s help, she grabbed the 6 year old and kept him back with her and her family….. they were stationed at plantation Buxton…. I think.

    Any help???

    • hello to all
This is Sanjay Chaturvedi from India. would like to help any one who wants to trace their roots in India, but as you know the rising costs of everything mainly transportation it is impossible for me to cater free of any charges.I mainly works for UP and BIHAR region as well as Bengal also. I can assure you that you will not feel to get cheated because I need only out of pocket expenses to carry on such searchings (i.e. Transportation, man power and fooding etc.) which comes only few thousand Indian Rs. 10000-15000/-.
So, if you feel that its worth contact me at this email : schaturvedi@outlook.com
For any other clarification feel free to contact me at above email and my cell +9194330103303
      Thanks/Sanjay

My Grandfather Rasool Ali Mahbubh was born on a boat in 1900 on a boat coming from India form parents Dhouri Sai Mahbubh and Razia. Orginally they are from Afganistan, lived in Gaya Bihar but boarded the ship from Calcutta bound for Pln. Springlands\Skeldon Estates. I would like to know the ship’s name and any other information so I can trace my family back to India.
